Why Filing Your Personal Taxes Before October 15th Matters

October 2, 2025 by Stan Jones

Every year, many taxpayers request an extension in April, giving them until October 15th to file their personal income tax returns. While this extra time can be helpful for gathering paperwork, it’s important to understand that October 15th is a firm deadline. Missing it could result in penalties, delayed refunds, or unwanted attention from the IRS.

At Stan Jones Bookkeeping and Accounting, LLC, we want to remind clients that an extension is an extension to file, not to pay. If you owed taxes back in April, those payments were due then, and interest may already be accruing. Filing by the October deadline simply ensures your return is finalized and submitted properly.

Why You Should File Before October 15th

  • Avoid Penalties & Interest – Filing late can trigger additional fees, especially if you owe taxes.
  • Secure Your Refund – If you’re expecting a refund, you won’t receive it until your return is filed.
  • Stay in Good Standing – Missing the deadline can cause unnecessary IRS complications.
  • Ensure Accuracy – Filing early gives you time to double-check numbers and avoid costly mistakes.

Requirements for Filing Personal Taxes

When you prepare to file your return, make sure you have the following documents and information ready:

  1. Personal Information – Social Security Numbers for yourself, your spouse, and dependents.
  2. Income Documents – W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, or other income statements.
  3. Deductions & Credits – Records of deductible expenses such as mortgage interest, medical bills, or charitable contributions.
  4. Investment & Retirement Income – Forms 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, or retirement account distributions.
  5. Health Insurance Forms – Form 1095-A if you purchased coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
  6. Tax Payments – Records of estimated or quarterly tax payments already made.
  7. Banking Information – Routing and account numbers for direct deposit of refunds.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

The October 15th deadline is closer than you think, and rushing increases the risk of mistakes. Filing early ensures accuracy and peace of mind.

At Stan Jones Bookkeeping and Accounting, LLC, we help individuals and families stay on track with tax deadlines while maximizing deductions and avoiding IRS penalties. Contact us today for personalized guidance and timely filing assistance.
